New for 2017
The 2017 Jeep Patriot is a carry-over model with no changes. Next year Jeep is expected to replace the Patriot and its mechanical twin, the Compass, with one all-new model.

Vehicle Summary
If any company was well positioned for the huge popularity of crossovers and small SUVs, it’s Jeep. The Patriot is just one of five different SUV/Crossover models at a Jeep dealership. There’s the mechanically identical Compass, the similar-sized Renegade, the cutting-edge Cherokee, and the range-topping Grand Cherokee. And because Fiat is part of the corporate Chrysler/Jeep family, you will also see the Renegade’s Italian sibling, the Fiat 500X, plus the micro-van-like Fiat 500L. That’s seven SUV-style vehicles at one dealership. What you need to know is that the Jeep lineup starts with the 10-year-old Patriot – the least expensive model. Then comes the equally old but more car-styled Compass. Next is the similarly sized, slightly more expensive but vastly more modern Renegade. Moving up in size, price and performance is the cool-looking Cherokee, topped by the larger, more luxurious Grand Cherokee. Yes, that’s a lot to remember.

Overview
This may be the 2017 Patriot’s last year, but Jeep isn’t skimping on the choices. To begin with, there are five models: Sport, Sport SE, Sport 75th Anniversary, Latitude, and High Altitude. Granted, the Sport, SE and 75th Anniversary are just variations on a basic model, with standard roll-up windows and air conditioning offered as an extra-cost option. The SE does add 17-inch alloy wheels and heated front seats, and the 75th Anniversary model adds bronze exterior trim and a power sunroof. But the Patriot doesn’t feel very well equipped until you reach for the Latitude or High Altitude. They offer better audio systems, upgraded interior trim, and climate control. Regardless, the Patriot still relies on a much older version of Jeep’s Uconnect multimedia interface. But true to the Jeep brand, the Sport and Latitude models can be equipped with a Freedom Drive II Off-Road package that adds skid plates, low-range gearing, transmission cooler, upgraded tires, and raised ride height. There’s also a Trailer Tow package that allows this little Jeep to pull up to 2,000 lbs.

More choices are offered in the engine, transmission, and drivetrain departments. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the model, it can be paired with a five-speed manual or belt-drive CVT. But it can’t be had with all-wheel drive. Next up is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder with a more Jeep-worthy 172 hp and 165 lb-ft. Not to be confused with the “Tigershark” 2.4-liter engine in the Renegade and Cherokee, this older engine comes with a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, or a heavy-duty CVT – again, depending on model and drivetrain.

Speaking of four-wheel-drive systems, there are two choices: Freedom Drive I and Freedom Drive II. Freedom Drive I is a basic “on-demand” system that comes with either the manual or six-speed automatic. But Freedom Drive II boasts low-range gearing and can only be matched with the heavy duty CVT.

With any of the engine, transmission, drivetrain combinations, the Patriot is less efficient than its more modern competition. EPA city/highway combined fuel economy ratings range from 25 mpg with the 2.0-liter engine and manual transmission, all the way down to 21 mpg with the 2.4-liter engine and Freedom Drive II AWD.

Safety
The 2017 Jeep Patriot comes with six airbags: driver and front passenger airbags, front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. This Jeep is one of the last vehicles to use rear drum brakes – on front-drive models. AWD models have four-wheel disc brakes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Patriot a four-star “Overall” safety rating, with a low three-star rating for “Frontal Crash” and “Rollover” results. In the “Side Crash” test the Patriot rated a full five stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Jeep Patriot its top “Good” marks in all but the front overlap test, where it has a very low “Poor” rating. The headlights were also rated as “Poor.” Contemporary safety features like blind spot monitoring, pre-collision detection, and lane-departure warning are not available on the 2017 Jeep Patriot.

What We Think
Our last test of a Jeep Patriot was way back in 2010. Back then we said the Patriot was a decent compromise for drivers who spend most of their time on-road, but still like the idea of mild off-roading. But that was six years ago. And the small crossover SUV has become a far more refined species of automobile, which makes the slow, noisy, and fuel-hungry Patriot an outlier. True, it looks the part of a real Jeep. And also true, it can be equipped for actual off-roading – unlike the vast majority of other small SUVs. There is even an argument to be made for having 10 years of production to work out any bugs; indeed the Patriot feels tight and solid. Call it “well proven.” Yet the old-style drivetrain, dated interior and lack of modern safety and connectivity features leave the Patriot in the dust. If you want a modern Jeep, look across the dealership lot and find a Renegade or Cherokee.

Cool Fact
The Freedom Drive II Off Road package helps the Patriot live up to its Jeep name, with low-range gearing, skid plates, raised ride height – 9.1 inches of ground clearance! – transmission cooler and an off-road mode for the traction control. A RAV4, CR-V, or Ford Escape doesn’t offer anything like this trail-rated equipment.
